Disney Part I

My Thoughts on 2013 post made me realize that I failed to blog about a few very fun trips we took in 2013.  One of which was to the happiest place on earth, Disney World!

I'm not really sure how to capture the magic of that week.   I have several friends traveling to Disney for the first time soon and others planning trips so I will give you my best take on Disney and how it worked for us.  I am going to have to do this in a few posts because it's just too much for one!  This first post will just be the basics.

{Magic Bands}

The timing of our trip gave us the advantage of testing the new magic band system at Disney.  All of your tickets, room access, dining plan, and
fast pass info is loaded into these magic little bands!
It was awesome!
Of course, being new we did experience a few kinks.  Jackson's band never worked, so I just kept the information pulled up on my phone so they could see that he did in fact have fast passes.  It was never a problem because as I quickly learned, the Disney cast members are so pleasant to deal with.    We also opted for park hopper passes and would do so again.  It was nice to have the option to visit two parks in one day!

One of the things I was anxious about before we went was Hampton doing a lot of sitting while the big boys rode stuff that he could not ride so I tried to stagger our fast pass times so that the things he could not do were spaced out.  He did have to wait a lot, but it was nothing a snack could not fix!
Another thing I worried about unnecessarily was not getting to ride things with both boys.  They were not tall enough to ride many things without an adult so we used our fast passes in conjunction with Disney's rider switch service.  For example, we all wanted to ride Space Mountain and had a fast pass.  Obviously, Hamp could not ride so one of us would enter the fast pass line with one boy and ask for a rider switch card.  We would ride the ride, then find each others at the exit.  The riding parent would then grab the other boy and we would go back to the fast pass line to ride again, now with our rider switch card so we could experience it with both boys!  You can read more about it here.

{Where we stayed}
ART of ANIMATION
Cars Family Suite

In that we were going to Disney for a full week, we chose to stay in one of the new suites at Art of Animation and of course, having all boys, the Cars option was a no brainer.  With the ages of our boys {7 and 2} we loved that this suite gave us two rooms.  We could put Hampton down for bed while the big boys stayed up.  Perks of this room are two bathrooms, a small kitchenette, and will sleep 6 with a couch that pulls out and a murphy bed. I am a visual person so this helped me to visualize when we were planning.  These rooms are spacious {550 square feet} and it was very quiet.  In fact, we rarely saw anyone on our hall or in the elevators!

{What we ate}
On the recommendation of several friends, we opted for the Disney Dining Plan.  The plan we had gave us 1 Quick Service Meal, 1 Table Service meal and one snack each day.  We took our own breakfast stuff and ate the rest of the meals in the parks.  I did pack additional snacks and water bottles for our diaper bag.  {note about water: Disney's water in the parks tasted funny to me.  I tried refilling water bottles at several water fountains and the stuff just tasted funny!  I suggested you bring your own bottled water!}  Disney food is expensive and I preferred this because it made it feel more "all inclusive" and not like we were pulling our wallets out every five minutes.

Disney has made it really convenient to make reservations for food, fast passes, etc. on their website.  Through this site I was able to make all of our dining reservations ahead of time {180 days out}, but it is important to know that Disney has a cancellation fee for some sit down restaurants now of $10 a person!   Even being able to book 6 months out we did not get all of the reservations we wanted!  I poured over reviews and decided on the following reservations for table service.

Yak & Yeti and Rainforest Cafe in Animal Kingdom: loved both of these meals!

Chef Mickey's in the Contemporary Hotel: fun for kids, but food was buffet so not great

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theatre at Hollywood Studios: Awesome food and experience

Boma at Animal Kingdom Lodge: Another buffet, but good food.  This was the only breakfast meal that we ate and mainly because we needed to use another table service!

T-Rex at Downtown Disney:  Big boys loved this, but not Hampton.  It was loud and kind of scary.  Food was great!

We also had a reservation at O'Hana one night and it was the one meal I was really looking forward to.  However, we pushed it that day and Hampton was NOT going to make it through a sit down dinner.  We cancelled {to avoid fee} and had pizza delivered to our room instead.  This took two of our table service meals.

For quick service our favorites were
Columbia Harbour House & Pecos Bill in Magic Kingdom;
La Cantina de San Angel in Epcot.

Robot Dog. Night Vision Goggles. Bug Vacuum…Yogurt Maker!

A. Liz Adventures

our christmas favorites 2

{1} My sweet SIL {sister-in-love} was listening all those times I complimented her Jenna Kator Greektown bag!  This bag is perfect for shopping with or without kids! It holds my small wallet, phone, and lip gloss easily…Mine is a grey/taupe color which goes with everything!

{2} I love these pants!  I can not exercise in long pants….I am the crazy person in shorts year round, BUT as soon as I get home these are the pants I go to!  You will love the thickness and I think they have the perfect amount of stretch!

{3} My SIL parent's gifted these Snowtime Anytime snowballs to the boys and they were a HIT!  We all have had so much fun with these.  I would say these are the perfect family gift because it truly is fun for the whole family!  The most amazing thing is that these snowballs feel like real snow!

{4} I feel 90 years old saying this, but I got an electric blanket from my parents and it has changed my life.  I made an "age" joke when I opened it because, "Hello…We're still in our 30's."  Never have words tasted so good.    With colder than normal temperatures this winter I have loved heating up my bed before crawling in for the night.

{5} I fell in love with this bracelet when it popped up on my neighbor's wrist.  My sweet brother and his girlfriend treated me with this for Christmas and I have worn it constantly.  {Have I ever mentioned that I set them up on a blind date?  I will have to blog about that one}  I love that these are adjustable to fit all size wrists and made in America.  LOVE!

And while we're talkin' favorites,
this reminds me of a quote from my
favorite character on my favorite show

Claire: You're impossible to buy for! You never want anything.
Phil[Confessional] Um, things I want: robot dog, night vision goggles, bug vacuum, GPS watch, speakers that look like rocks... I love my wife, but she sucks at giving gifts. I'm sorry for the pay-channel language, but- oh! Yogurt maker! I can't not think of things I want.

I can't NOT think of things I want!  Gets me every time!  Happy Friday, my friends!  Let me know if you try any of my favorite things!

Last weekend…and it's already Wednesday.

Christmas break is officially over and the big boys have headed back to school to wrap up second grade.  How is that even possible?  As if my uterus were not having a difficult week already, after we converted Hampton's bed from a crib to toddler bed, now I realize we are approaching the "intermediate" grades….I  can't even handle it.

Anyhoo, as much fun as we had living in our pajamas and staying up way too late over the break it was time to go back to school.  I could not have watched ONE more movie, played ONE more board game, or heard ONE more time, "I'm hungry."  I love my kids as much as the next guy, but our "family time" meter petered out a good 6 days ago.  It was time.

Last Friday I began to feel a little desperate.  We politely asked {read: begged} Lee's parents if the boys could come there for a night or two because they needed a change of scenery.  That and I needed to take a shower without an audience.

Lee took the kids up Saturday and when that door closed I literally stood in the silence for 5 minutes.  Just listening to nothing.  It was awesome.  I piddled around the house, wrote a few thank you notes, took a shower…alone.

We went to church Saturday night and then met our neighbors, who were also kidless, at a little sushi place in town.  I ordered lettuce wraps and my favorite roll that has, as best we could tell, an asian version of pimento cheese.    We were stuffed by 8:30 and the hubbys said something about watching football, so Tina and I sent them home together and we headed to the TJ Maxx.  Nothing better than a deserted TJ and a good friend.

I found a great club chair {pic below} and decided that it might need to come live with us.  I took a few pictures to show Lee in hopes that we would love it.

Side story: We have a little "keeping room" {it was called that on our house plans…we've "kept" Hampton's toys and dust bunnies in there until now}… to make way for our Christmas tree, we moved a chair out of our den into the keeping room and I have come to love this cozy little spot.  We've always had one loveseat in there from our old house simply to have some furniture in there, but it never felt like a real "space."   When we took the tree down, I was so sad to lose my cozy chair so I had been thinking of buying a chair for that room or for the den.

{Keeping Room before we moved in and wrecked the place}

This chair is super comfortable and a neutral fabric…our TJ does a furniture special each January, maybe yours does too!  You should check it out…I will tell you about that floor lamp in my next post!

Sunday found us taking down Christmas and is it just me or is that not the saddest day?  I think I have a "Christmas House."  My den just looks better with a 9 foot tree in it.  We also went to pick up the new chair, had lunch at Zoe's Kitchen, and went by Lowe's.  Lee and I were joking that it felt like exactly the kind of day we had before kiddos.

Sunday night we decided to go to a movie…Saving Mr. Banks.  Y'all.  First of all, Mary Poppins was my favorite movie growing up.  I can sing every song and recite every line.  I know that shows my age, but it was an "older movie" when I started watching it.  I have been dying to see this movie and I will not give it away for those of you who still want to see it.  If you were a Mary Poppins fan, it is a must see.  And if you can watch through "Let's Go Fly a Kite" without crying we can not be friends anymore.  Just kidding.  But really.

Monday I cleaned house ALL DAY and let's just say it stayed that way until the boys got home.  That night I had a meeting, into which I flew like a chicken with my head cut off and perhaps one wing, and then flew to my mama's to celebrate my Mimi's 79th birthday!  She is just precious!  My mom made the Red Velvet-White Chocolate Cheesecake that graced the December cover of Southern Living.  It says this cake takes a total of 13 hours, 45 minutes to prepare.  That is love, y'all.  I just love Mimi's face when she sees the cake!!

So that was our weekend…my next post is going to be on favorite presents from Christmas!

Goodness

We sat down as a family yesterday to talk over our family goals and personal goals.  This is the first time we have ever done this together and it was mainly because one of the boys asked me what "revolutions" were.   I wrote all of our thoughts down in my planner and now typing this, realize that I am going really public so here goes….

{Family}
Have one family date each month
Help another family once a month {meals, visits, just do something nice}
Continue to make our offering and give more when we can
Teach Hampton to say the blessing

{Misty and Lee}
lose weight through exercise and healthy food
read at least one book a month
spend time in a daily devotional

{just me}
blog at least once a week
keep cleaning schedule
Claim a verse for the year and LIVE BY IT

{big boys}
play DS only once a week
read at least one chapter book a month
improve at baseball
give offering each month
and my favorite "drink more milk"

{hampton with our help}
sleep in my own bed all night
use the potty

We've done so well thus far!  BUT IT'S ONLY JANUARY 2nd.

We have all exercised today, although mine was not pretty.

I am blogging.

We've done our devotionals.

Now here's were the story takes a turn.  A good one, so hang on.

For months {MONTHS} I have looked at the clock and the time has been 12:34.  At first I thought, "that's neat" but after about the tenth time I felt like someone was resetting the clocks in our house just to mess with me.  Last night it happened again….12:34 AM {we have been keeping super late nights this Christmas break}.

As I lie in bed thinking on this clock coincidence, it hit me.  Maybe I should use these numbers to find my verse.

So this morning I read my devotional, went to the bank and the gym and went about my day until just now when I sat down to find my verse.

ROMANS.  Something told me to go to Romans 12: 3-4.  So I did...

I’m speaking to you out of deep gratitude for all that God has given me, and especially as I have responsibilities in relation to you. Living then, as every one of you does, in pure grace, it’s important that you not misinterpret yourselves as people who are bringing this goodness to God. No, God brings it all to you. The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what he does for us, not by what we are and what we do for him.In this way we are like the various parts of a human body. Each part gets its meaning from the body as a whole, not the other way around. The body we’re talking about is Christ’s body of chosen people. Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of his body. {The Message}

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function {NIV}

 I live in pure grace.  I am bring no goodness to God...HE brings it all to me.

Goodness.  I scrambled back over to my post from yesterday and there was that word.

Goodness.

I wrote at the beginning, "I have lived long enough to know that it's ok to look back with fondness as long as I keep my eyes fixed on the goodness that will inevitably find me again.  These pictures reflect the goodness that 2013 brought to my life. "  And at the end, "So here's to family and friends and birthdays and goodness."

2013 did not bring goodness to me.  God did.

God,
It's your breath in my lungs. Use me for your goodness.

Do you have verse this year?  A word? I'd love for you to comment and share
